The commercial televisions you see in public places look fairly similar to your domestic televisions at home, and without the technical know-how, trying to set up your first professional display for your business can be difficult. We understand the biggest barriers to entry users face is largely based on the complexity of the equipment. Knowing the difference between consumer and professional displays can save you a lot of time and money down the road.
This article will explain the key differences between consumer and professional (commercial) displays, how to set up your professional display, and then we will recommend the best displays and media players to use that fits your needs. We hope this information will help you make an informed decision when purchasing a professional display for your business, or at least give you a better idea if you are planning to upgrade your existing consumer displays.
Table of contents:
Digital Signage is one of the most customizable forms of advertising and can be used to communicate information quickly. If you are considering using digital signage for your business, school, or even as a silent ad display in a store, a display can offer that eye-catching content needed to grab the attention of your audience.
That being said, let's dive into the two types of screens in the digital signage world - Professional displays and consumer displays. Professional displays have a much wider range of uses than consumer displays as they can operate three times as long and are far more durable. Whereas consumer displays are designed for home use, for instance watching a movie or playing video games. These professional displays are mainly used in business environments for uses such as a menu board in a restaurant, wayfinding kiosks, retail stores, and most commonly flight information boards in Airports.
As display technology evolves, viewers are setting higher expectations. Therefore it is essential for businesses to deliver exceptional picture quality for their customers. So keep reading below to see why you should purchase a professional display for your business, the important features a professional display has, and which hardware and display combos we recommended for you to purchase.
2. Why should you choose a professional display over a standard consumer display?
There are a handful of benefits for choosing a professional display for your digital signage. Below we've highlighted some of the key insights during your search for a hardware option:
i) Hour of Operation
Professional displays are designed to operate for long periods of time without damaging any components within the display or dropping image quality. They are far more robust and can stand extensive use in the toughest conditions, whereas the average consumer TV you’d purchase at your local electronic store is designed for minimal use in residential environments. While consumer TVs are great for watching movies they are not designed for continuous use and should typically stop using them after 8 hours as they are at risk of severe internal damage or overheating.
These commercial displays are built with an internal fan or components that allow for heat dissipation. This means that your displays can run for 16/7 hours or even up to 24/7 hours 365 days a year. Professional displays are great for digital signage as they provide peace of mind that your display will last long and won’t fail while you are in the process of using it. So the rule of thumb, first makes sure to check the operational hours of your display (this should be listed in the specifications).
Brightness is a very important feature to consider when choosing a display for your digital signage. Professional displays are equipped with very high brightness such as 400-3000 nits, mainly to account for outdoor or inconsistent lighting caused by uncontrolled environments. In addition, most professional displays come with anti-glare and local dimming capabilities. This allows for these displays to adapt to various locations and still produce consistent picture quality. Whereas consumer TV’s operate best in controlled lighting and usually have about 150-300 nits.
iii) Cost of Ownership
Some businesses may favor the use of a consumer display for their digital signage as they are much cheaper, but this may present many issues down the road. Buying a consumer display rather than a professional display may seem like the best choice for your wallet, but professional displays offer a significantly better return on investment.
Cost plays an important role in the decision-making process. Oftentimes, many businesses would purchase consumer displays under the assumption that professional displays would cost them an arm and a leg, or simply because they just aren't aware of their options. But with a bit of information, they would come to learn that even though these displays have a high initial investment, they come with an array of features that consumer TVs do not have. If you are planning to purchase a display for long term investment, a commercial display is most likely outlast a consumer display and save you more money in the long term. Using standard televisions for professional signage applications will result in constant maintenance and adjustments.
iv) Anti-Theft Precautions (Vandalism)
It is very important to secure your displays and take anti-theft precautions to prevent unauthorized personnel from making adjustments to your screens as this could be detrimental to the messages you are trying to get across.
With consumer displays, it is so easy for someone to change a channel or to connect via HDMI and upload an inappropriate piece of content. And accidents do happen. Many professional displays already provide these protective measures that block individuals from tampering with the power, volume, or any other controls that are easily accessible to the public.
Professional signage displays are designed to meet the needs of a wide range of business applications such as advertisement displays, menu information, wayfinding kiosks, or even to display company messages. Regardless of your digital signage purpose, professional displays are built for demanding environments.
The physical chassis are designed much stronger to withstand any environment that has vibrations, dust, smoke, or even grease. Environments with high pollutants such as fast-food restaurants, bus terminals, factories, ski resorts, hot weather, cold weather, you name it these displays can handle it. For example, menu boards can get really hot but can also get very greasy and dusty so you need that extra coat of protection that professional displays provide. Even the display panels are commercial grade screens to reduce the possibility of burn-in and image retention.
Not all screens are made equal, so what may be good for your restaurant isn't necessarily good for your lobby. If you use a display in a scenario it is not built for, for example, exceeding the daily operational hour limit or exceeding the temperature limit, the manufacturer may no longer honor the warranty.
There are also a number of expandable features that you can use or benefit from with a professional display for your digital signage. Some of the notable features are:
i) Open Pluggable Specification (OPS)
The key dividing feature between professional displays and consumer displays is their variety of expandable features. Open Pluggable Specification (OPS) is an industry-wide standard for commuting system solutions, in simpler words, it is a set of criteria for external PC's allowing these modules to easily be inserted, serviced, or replaced with any display having this capability. Having this standardized slot in your professional display allows users to constantly keep up to date with the latest technology. Users can upgrade their processing power whenever a new and faster software enters the market. No need to go out and purchase a whole new display just simply purchase an OPS module with the latest software and plug it in!
Appearance is so important these days, especially in retail shops. Have you ever been in a shop and was immediately turned off by the lack of organization? Purchasing a professional display with an OPS slot can give viewers a good impression and sets the tone of the store or any application of your choice.
These pluggable media players allow for easy installation and maintenance. These OPS modules can push rigors video formats, ideal for the digital signage market. This solution makes it possible to integrate digital signage media players into commercial displays seamlessly, effectively turning your display into an All-in-One PC solution.
ii) Touch Screen Capability
Not only that but Professional displays also have the ability to add touch screen overlays, allowing for any professional display to gain the ability of touch screen. This can dramatically enhance the way customers look for information at information kiosks.
4. Recommended Professional Display Media Players and for Digital Signage
We have done the heavy lifting for you and listed below our top recommended display options for different use cases. We have categorized displays into different hourly usages, such as 16/7 hours, 18/7 hours, and 24/7 hours. Within those categories, we have sectioned different price points. We have budget choice options for entry users, medium choice options, and premium options for those looking for the best possible digital signage set up regardless of price.
Low Functioning Professional Displays (16/7 hours)
If you are looking for a professional set up but do not require the extensive list of features some of our premium choices have, a 16-hour operational display should suit your needs. Displays that run 16 hours a day, seven days a week are perfect for the corporate, or educational sectors. In these types of environments there are typically controlled temperatures and often don't need to run a full 24/7 operational time. The options below are our most recommended display options running 16/7 hours:
Budget Choice - Toshiba TD-E3 Display + Ugoos AM6
Best for: Menu Board, Retail stores,
Toshiba TD-E3 (Best Choice)
Our first recommendation is the budget option. If you are looking for a beginner's display, the Toshiba TD-E3V Series is very affordable and is a great entry point for new professional display users.
The TD-E3V Series comes in 5 different sizes, 32”, 43”, 55”, and 65". Unfortunately, this display does sit in the lower tier of the market in terms of resolution as it only supports full HD, although the 65” display does support 4K content. We recommend purchasing a 43" or higher display, as they contain more features such as built-in WIFI, display ports, and lockable USB ports to prevent tampering. This display has a decent brightness of 400 cd/m2, which is good for larger meeting rooms where viewers may be sitting from afar. The TD-E3V also contains an IPS panel type that produces great viewing angles and displays consistent brightness levels across the screen. And if you want, you can transfer this display into an interactive touch screen!
This series also complies with the industry-standard, Open Pluggable Specifications (OPS), which eliminates the need for an external PC, power supplies, or long cables, giving your displays a very sleek and professional look if you happen to choose this type of media player. But for this budget set, we recommend combining your Toshiba TD-E3V display with an Android-powered box such as the AM6.
However, If you prefer a Windows operating system, we suggest purchasing the lowest grade Windows-powered media player like the Intel NUC 8 Celeron. If that is too expensive, you can downgrade to the Intel NUC 7 Celeron. And if you prefer a Chrome operating system, we recommend the AOpen Chromebox Mini.

Ugoos AM6 (Best Hardware)
The Ugoos AM6 is equipped with an Amlogic S922X SoC, 2G of DDR4 RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. This box runs on the Android 9.0 operating system and also has the latest High-Efficiency Video Coding, most commonly known as HEVC or H.265. This next-level video processor allows for 4K videos to be easily compressed and streamed to your display without compromising any picture quality. And it looks great!
The AM6 is enclosed in an aluminum chassis, this not only gives the box a sleek and professional look but its build dissipates heat, protects it, and provides stable processing for a kind of task.
Medium Choice - Sharp PN-HW Series + Ugoos AM6
Best for: Retail stores, Conference Rooms, Shopping malls
Sharp PN-HW Series (Best choice)
Our medium choice displays running 16-hours are the Sharp PN-HW Series and Sharp PN-HB Series. If you are looking for a display that supports a higher resolution and has a significant jump in processing power, Sharp is a great brand for this category.
The Sharp PN-HW digital signage series comes in a very wide range of 43”, 50” 55”, 65”, 75”, and 86". This series supports 4K content and has a contrast ratio of 4000: 1. To clarify, the contrast ratio is the difference between the brightest a TV can get and the darkest.
It has a decent brightness of 350 nits and 400 nits for sizes 75” up. What gives this display an edge and makes it perfect for digital signage is its built-in temperature sensor. This display also has the ability to make quick adjustments in brightness to match in-room lighting making content visibly easier on the eyes.
Sharps PN-HW does not come with a built-in system-on-chip so we recommend pairing this display with the powerful Ugoos AM6 media player as mentioned above, or a more powerful Windows-powered PC such as the Intel NUC 8 Core i5 vPro or any similar devices. We also recommend the AOpen Chromebox Commercial 2 Celeron for those who favor Chrome OS-powered media players.

Sharp PN-HB (Second Best Choice)
In contrast, the PN-HB series does come with a System-On-Chip that runs Android 7.1. This display comes in sizes 65”, 75”, and 85 inches and has a Hexacore processor. Like its sister display, it also supports 4K content and has an even greater color contrast of 5000: 1. This display has a lower brightness of 350 nits which is okay and suited for more indoor locations. This series is designed for easy installation and can be placed in landscape mode, portrait mode, or even face up. Also, note that this display does come with built-in 10W+10W rear speakers.
For those looking to upgrade their digital signage set up even further, the PN-HB series has 'Daisy Chain' capabilities, allowing up to 4 displays to be connected together. To enhance their functionality, even more, the PN-HB series comes standard-equipped with an OPS expansion slot.
Even though this display has a system-on-chip, for digital signage purposes we recommend purchasing a separate media player such as the Ugoos AM6 powered by Android, the AOpen Chromebox Commercial 2 Celeron powered by Chrome, or windows powered PC such as the Intel NUC 8 Core i5 vPro or any similar devices.

Premium Choice - Samsung QBR Series + Intel NUC 8th Gen Hades Canyon
Best for: Demanding digital signage environments such as in airports or expositions.
Samsung QBR (Best Choice)
Our Premium choice displays running 16/7 is of course Samsung. Samsungs superior technology positions itself securely in our premium choice category.
For a commercial display, the Samsung QBR is a great option as it has stunning picture quality and is able to deliver rich, life-like images thanks to ultra-high-definition 4K resolution.
Samsung has developed intelligent upscaling technology that gives companies the ability to elevate even the most basic content to impeccable picture quality. Businesses can save money and time as they can produce lower-cost content and still display it at a much higher resolution. The QBR series comes in an array of sizes to choose from, such as 43”, 49”, 55”, 65”, and 75” displays. This series is also equipped with a dynamic crystal coloring processor displaying a wide spectrum of color, up to a billion to be exact.
Like all Samsung displays, it runs on a Tizen 4.0, but For digital signage purposes, we recommend pairing this display with a Windows-powered media player such as the Intel NUC 8 Home Mini PC Core i3 or i5 to support demanding content and to give the user more control over what they show, and how they show it.
Samsung QB43R 4K UHD LCD Display - 43”
Samsung QB49R 4K UHD LCD Display - 49”
Samsung QB55R 4K UHD LCD Display - 55”
Samsung QB65R 4K UHD LCD Display - 65”
Samsung QB75R 4K UHD LCD Display - 75”
Samsung QB98R 4K UHD LCD Display - 98”
Samsung QHH (Second Best Choice)
If Samsungs QBR's low peak brightness does not suit your needs, our second-best choice is the Samsung QHH. This display is very similar in specs to the QBR Series but has a brightness of 600 cd/m2.
The QHH is a good alternative to the QBR if you are looking to purchase a brightener screen. For instance, If you're going to place your screen in an area constantly exposed to sunlight, it might be a good idea to purchase a brighter screen to compensate for the glare. On the downside, there is a limited amount of sizes to choose from as the Samsung QHH only has 55" and 65" displays, but a 55” should do it.
Intel NUC 8 Home Mini PC Core i3 or i5 (Best Hardware)
Intel’s NUC mini PC’s are among the most powerful and reliable Digital Signage devices available on the market. We recommend the $450 Intel NUC 8 Home Mini PC Core i3 or Intel NUC 8 Home Mini PC Core i5, with Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro. These mini PC’s come with Celeron, Core i3, and Core i5 processors and plenty of storage space with 32GB, 128G, and 1TB respectively. We recommend choosing a Celeron or Core i3 processor if you’re more price-conscious and a Core i5 processor if you want the most powerful and future-proof device.
This media player is equipped with HDMI outputs, ethernet, video format support, Kensington lock slots, and VESA mount compatibility. This device also has a 3-year warranty.
Medium Functioning Professional Displays (18/7 hours)
Perhaps a display that runs 16/7 hours doesn't meet the requirements of your digital signage needs, but a 24/7 display is a bit overkill. Luckily there is a sweet spot right in the middle! 18/7 hour displays offer that perfect balance. However, it is important to note when looking through this section, to keep in mind that it is rare to find professional displays running 18/7 hours therefore there are limited options (except for Sony).
Budget Choice - LG SE3KE Series + AM6
Best for: retail shops, hospitality areas, lobbies, and other corporate meeting areas.
If you are looking for a professional installation but have a limited budget, we suggest taking a look at the LG SE3KE series. The LG SE3KE comes in sizes 32", 43", 49", and 55" displays. This display only supports HD content and a decent contrast ratio of 1100: 1. However, the LG SE3KE comes with an IPS panel so picture quality will not degrade even when being viewed from an angle. Ideal for retail shops, hospitality areas, lobbies, and other corporate meeting areas.
This series has an industrial design-build and contains a coating on all circuit boards to minimize component damage by protecting against humidity and dust. The SE3KE series offers a PBP (Picture-By-Picture) and PIP (Picture-In-Picture) feature giving the user the ability to divide the screen and create zones. This can be perfect for the corporate setting if you would like to display multiple dashboards.
For a media player, we recommend selecting the Ugoos AM6 as it has many customizable features and will support an 18-hour operation. The AM6 has several interesting features perfectly suited for digital signage, among them we highlight the OTA update feature or “over-the-air” updates, allowing users to upgrade firmware or push changes remotely. Other settings include ROOT, Hardware Monitor, Playback Settings, Debug settings, User scripts and so much more.

Medium Choice Option - Phillips Q Line + Intel NUUC + Mini PC Core i3 or i5
Next, we would like to introduce our medium display recommendation running 18/7. The Phillips Q-Line comes in a variety of models but for digital signage purposes, we recommended purchasing the models supporting 4K. This series comes in a variety of sizes from 49" all the way to 98". 98" sounds exciting! However, if you are going to purchase a large display like this, we recommend selecting from one of our premium choices.
The Q-line series is sturdy, reliable, and has a smooth performance. This model has a peak brightness of 350 nits which is lower than what we recommend for professional displays, but this model uses advanced IPS technology and better backlighting making it more viewable under direct sunlight.
This display also has 'Daisy Chain' capabilities so creating your own 2x2 video wall is very possible. The Philips Q-line is ideal for digital menu boards in restaurants as they do not require demanding content but still produce crisp images and vivid colors as it has a high contrast ratio of 4000: 1. It is also very important to note that although this display runs 18/7 hours in landscape mode, this display can only run for 12-hours at a time in portrait mode.
As this display only runs on Android 5.0 we recommend combining this screen with a powerful Intel NUC 8 Mini PC Core i3 or i5.
Premium Choice - Sony XG85/XG80 Series + Intel NUC 8 Hades Canyon
Best for: Corporate presentation, Digital signage, Video conferencing, Education
Sony XG85/XG80 Series (Best Choice)
Sony as a brand has given birth to some of the most iconic electronics and has consistently dominated the market. In 2019 Sony released its very first line of BRAVIA professional displays all running 18/7 hours.
As a premium brand, we have the confidence to say the Sony XG85/XG80 series will be the perfect addition to your digital signage strategy. Out of all the professional display series released that year, the Sony XG85 series has the largest range of sizes from 43", 49", 55", 65",75" to 85" displays, giving users more than enough options. This series runs on an Android 8.0 operating system and can quickly install and run third-party APK files. Their lower models like the 43" and 49" displays have a brightness of 400 nits while larger sizes display up to 620 nits.
With Sony displays, everything you watch is sharpened. Their new line of professional displays contains innovative HDR features and X1 processors that use object-based rendering in real-time. This intelligent technology analyzes objects on the screen and adjusts the color contrast so the resemblance to real images is uncanny. Its local dimming features can accurately balance the light input across the screen so darker scenes get darker and brighter scenes get brighter, so there is no way viewers will miss your content now!
However, if the Sony XG85/XG80 is a bit too out of your budget but appeals to this premium range standard, we recommend downgrading to the Sony XG7 model. If money isn't a problem, Sony's new flagship models also include their very first 8K BRAVIA professional display available in sizes 85" and 98 inches.

SONY FWD-85X85G/T BRAVIA 4K Ultra HD
Sony XG7 (Second choice)
The Sony XG7 professional display is a cheaper alternative to the Sony XG85/XG80, and it still has a 4K resolution. It is supported by a powerful SoC running Android, and it is also designed for 18/7 operation. Sony XG7 comes with fewer sizes to choose from, such as 43", 49", 55", and 65", and all have a low peak brightness of 400 nits. However, sizes 43" and 49" have a color contrast of 1100: 1, whereas the larger sizes have a color contrast of 6000: 1. We recommend purchasing at least a 55" display as this will make your content really pop.
This series comes with a wide variety of features that are not commonly found in professional displays such as Full Array Dimming. Full array dimming allows for certain regions of the panel to dim while others stay lit. This improves the blackness levels so that areas that would normally appear grey appear as black instead.
The XG7 is equipped with Motionflow XR which "inserts addition picture frames between the originals" creating a smoother picture. This series also comes with power-saving modes, dynamic backlight control features as well as 10W+10W speakers.
High Functioning Professional Displays (24/7 hours)
Purchasing a high functioning professional display can be daunting as they are quite expensive. We categorize all professional displays running 24/7 as high functioning. These displays are designed to go through the most rigorous condition. You would most commonly find these displays in areas that operate
all day and all night. For example, you are using a display for control rooms that require around the clock observations. You will need to purchase a display that you can rely on. Hardware errors can result in many wasted man-hours and can cause damage to your brand.
Budget Choice - Toshiba TD-Z PRO or TD-Q3 + Ugoos AM6
Best for: 24/7 fast-food restaurants, conveniences stores, control rooms
For a budget choice option, we recommend purchasing either the Toshiba TD-Z Pro or the Toshiba TD-Q3 and pairing it with an Ugoos AM6 media player. Even though the Toshiba TD-Z PRO only supports 1080 p content, its high brightness of 700 nits truly brings out the colors and details of any content displayed on the screen.
Sometimes the job calls for uncompromising quality and performance, If so the Toshiba TD-Z Pro+Series fits the bill as It has the ability to consistently play through all day and night. These 1080p Full HD displays offer high brightness for attention-grabbing images. They also offer full functionality with portrait and landscape modes, tiling mode, USB media player, RS232C, LAN, and IR control, DisplayPort in/out, and an Intel® OPS slot for use with a wide variety of optional modules. Plus, you can count on these true professional-grade displays rated for 24/7 operation, with failover support, a rugged metal cabinet with rear carry handles, and a strong 3-year limited commercial warranty.
Communicate high-quality business content throughout the day and night, on a robust display designed for continuous, 24/7 use.

Toshiba TD-Q493 - 49" Commercial Display
Toshiba TD-Q553 - 55" Commercial Display
If you are looking for a display that puts out a higher resolution but is still within your budget range, we recommend purchasing one of Philips D-Line's professional displays. The D-Line displays come in a variety of sizes ranging from 32 inches all the way to 98 inches. However, for digital signage, we recommend only purchasing from 65 inches up as these larger displays support 4K content and anything smaller only supports 1080p content.
Like every other display in this high-end category, this display can operate for 24/7 hours, has an IPS panel, therefore, it's good for wide viewing angle, and has a color contrast ranging from 1100:1 to 1300:1 depending on which specific size you purchase.
What is especially unique about this display and why we recommend it as a budget option, is because it is powered by Android, meaning there is no requirement for an external media player as you can install ScreenCloud's Android player on the display and load your digital signage content directly. The benefit of this is that you are cutting hardware costs by only purchasing a display, as well as cutting down installation time.
Media players do provide much more advanced features and customization options though, that you cannot get with the built-in Android setup. So if you prefer using an external player, purchase our first option with an Android-powered Ugoos AM6 device, or if you prefer just buying a display, then purchase a Philips D-line display. Samsung QHR (Best Choice)
Our medium Choice displays running 24-7 hour operation is the Samsung QHR or series. This display honestly belongs to the absolute top class of 4K TVs simply for its brilliant imaging.
We highly recommend this display for its high brightness of 700 nits and color contrast of 4000: 1. Not only that, but this series features Dynamic Crystal coloring which expresses up to 10 billion different shades.
This series comes in a wide range of 43", 49", 55", 65", and 75" so don't worry, there is a size for everyone. Its intelligent upscaling technology and HDR+ features convert standard content to the highest of quality.

Samsung OHF (Second Best Choice)
This series is perfectly fit for digital signage as it comes with numerous features that allow you to fit this display in any environment.
If you prefer a higher brightness we recommend purchasing the Samsung OHF series. This series has an extremely high peak brightness of 2,500 nits! The OHF also comes with anti-reflection technology, suited for brightly lit rooms such as expositions or airports.
Most importantly for outdoor digital signage, this series comes with an advanced protective layer of 5mm tempered magic glass, protecting the LCD panel in the event the glass is broken, which is highly unlikely as this display is IK10-certified!
But wait, there's more. The Samsung OHF comes with a complete cooling system and thermal control functionality, allowing the display to function in -30 Celsius (-22 F) and up to 50 degrees Celsius (122 F). In addition, if you are worried about dust, moisture, or even water, the OHF series comes with IP56 level protection, which is the highest standard of ingress protection. This display is completely revolutionizing the way digital signage is used outdoors. Gone are the days when we purchased those thick, clunky display enclosures.
